Abingdon, VA is a charming town that offers a lot more than its small size may suggest. From the performing arts to ample outdoor adventure opportunities, there is plenty to enjoy and explore here. If you have a case of the summer doldrums, read on to discover our favorite summer activities that you can drive to in the area.

3 Summer Activities You Can Drive to Near Abingdon, VA

1. Watching a Play at Barter Theatre

One great way to enjoy a summer afternoon or evening is to catch a play at Barter Theatre. Barter’s Smith Theatre is located at 110 West Main Street, and Gilliam Stage at Barter Theatre can be found at 127 West Main Street. You can park in any unmarked space on Valley Street Northwest or a marked space on Main Street. Additionally, there is parking behind Gilliam Stage Theatre.

One thing we love about Barter Theatre is that there are performances covering a wide range of genres. For instance, on Sunday, you can watch a live performance of Footloose. Then, you can go back on Thursday and catch a live adaptation of a horror flick. If you don’t see a performance you’re interested in one week, there may be something that suits your taste better.

2. Picking Out Produce at Abingdon Farmers Market

We also recommend visiting the Abingdon Farmers Market at the intersection of Cummings Street and Remsburg Drive. This farmer’s market features tasty, nutritious products from local artisans, farmers, and food producers. Picking up your produce here goes a long way in supporting your local community, it’s great for your family’s health, and it’s a great way to enjoy some fresh air.

3. Exploring the Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail

Another great way to enjoy the great outdoors and bolster your family’s health is to explore the Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail at 21198 Alvarado Rd. This 33.4-mile multi-use trail is the best rail trail in the state, beginning in Abingdon and terminating where North Carolina borders Virginia. One thing we love about this trail is the intensity.

It is a stunningly beautiful trail, but parts of it feature a grade approaching 7%. We also love all of the inclines and declines. The trail reaches its lowest point across South Holston Lake at roughly 2,000 feet above sea level. However, it ends closer to 3,600 feet above sea level.

There is plenty of summer fun to be had in Abingdon if you have a reliable car. If your car has let you down recently, and you don’t know if it is worth the regular repairs it requires, a 2024 Chevy Malibu may be a better fit for you.
