Spring Activities Near Abingdon, VA - Pioneer Chevrolet

Spring into action in Abingdon, VA. Mark the season with these fantastic regional spring activities.

Terrific Trailblazing

A famed trail used during the Revolutionary War begins at Abingdon Muster Grounds and takes you on a trek through the town’s wilderness. The sprawling expanse eventually winds into Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. As part of the U.S. Trails System, this scenic route is the perfect avenue for appreciating Virginia’s vegetation and foliage as it awakens for spring.

The 35-mile Virginia Creeper Trail also commences in Abingdon. Beginning in spring, hikers, cyclists, and equestrian riders are a fixture on this multipurpose rail trail that affords postcard-worthy views of the seasonal countryside. If you make the complete trek, you’ll journey through portions of a national forest and the famed Appalachian Trail.

Spring Getaways

The historic Martha Washington Inn & Spa, which began as a private residence in the early 1800s, takes any visitor back in time to a bygone era. Over 60 unique, charming rooms and some of the nation’s best spa treatments make this locale a beautiful spring getaway. You can spend leisurely evenings enjoying the landscape on the front porch while spending your nights melting your troubles away in the soothing saltwater-heated pool. You can even take a complementary bike into town.

And the inn offers a plethora of spring events, including an Easter egg hunt and Easter cookie decorating spectacular on the grounds, as well as Music on the Lawn in April and May. For another Easter to remember, visit early April’s Easter Adventure Trail at High Lodge Farm. Family-friendly and farm-themed events can also be found later in spring during late May’s Big Bale Play. Discover all the fun off A415 Abingdon Road.

Centers of Spring

A pair of community centers make spring in Abingdon a time to remember. The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, located on 1 Partnership Circle, hosts the Garden Faire in late April that features several seminars and workshops about floral design, rewilding, pollinators, and more. Plus, celebrate your favorite spring flowers with other floral enthusiasts.

At the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center and Marketplace, formerly known as Heartwood, celebrate the arts and crafts of Appalachia by visiting over 180 artisans as they work in their element. At 1 Heartwood Circle, also dance to several themed events throughout the spring honoring the region’s rich Appalachian music heritage.

An Evening at the Theater

Specifically, West Main Street’s Barter Theatre begins making patrons laugh, cry, and marvel at the talent-filled shows that have called this stage home since the 1870s.
